Oman has a long history of domination by foreign countries.
Portugal dominated the land in the 16th Century and in 1744
Persians were ousted. In the early 19th Century, Muscat and Oman
were the most important countries in the region, with control of
the Persian and Pakistani coasts. In 1951 a treaty confirmed
long standing ties with Britain and an uprising by interior rebels
was suppressed in Muscat. On July 23, 1970, Sultan Said bin
Taimur was overthrown by his son and the country's name was
changed to the Sultanate of Oman. Domestic development was
launched under the Sultans reign and oil has become a major
source of income. Oman has close political ties with the United
States and in 1985 established diplomatic ties with the U.S.S.R.
